Wake up to this view every morning ...
Water, water, every where, And not a worry in the world...
|
"Dark blue is the river; Golden is the sand
It flows along forever; With trees on either hand..."
xEscape the stresses and excesses of urban life! Come to "Riverbend"
and rediscover what you've always known - that simple pleasures are the best.
Some places have waterviews, others are close to the water. Riverbend Cottage has absolute deepwater river frontage along its whole seven acres. You are so close to the water's edge that for environmental reasons we had to build the modern bathroom a few metres away from the cottage (very romantic on a starlit night!) but don't worry, the short walkway between the Cottage and bathroom is covered in and you won't get wet on a rainy night.
Our drinking water comes straight from Heaven: it's pure rainwater - soft
and free from chemicals - but it's not limitless. For this reason
and because our insurance does not cover guests dissolving after too
much time in the shower, we encourage
sensible water use.
You are the only
guests in residence and enjoy complete privacy in a peaceful and
quiet setting far from crowds and traffic noise
(our house is next to the Cottage but we respect your privacy
and you have the exclusive use of the remaining five acres downriver) . Sitting on the
jetty, you can dangle a Huck Finn line from your big toe and hope that
nothing takes the bait and so disturb your pleasant daydream. Here at
Nelligen
(pronounced, should you wish to know, with a hard "g"),
you get peace and quiet by the bucketful. INQUIRE NOW ABOUT OUR WINTER SPECIALS: Winters by the River are Magic! No frosts but the nights are just cool enough to enjoy the cosy warmth of the Cottage. Watch your favourite DVDs (there are dozens to choose from!) or play a board game while you sip "Glühwein" (supplied by us in winter - or you can try your own by following this recipe) before slipping under your fluffy doona and electric blanket to listen to the silence of the river. Wake up as the mist lifts off the water and the birds begin to stir. Sit on the jetty in the early morning sun and see the fish jump. Spend an evening around the blazing campfire with Glühwein and damper! The Cottage is well heated and the bathroom has heating lamps installed in the ceiling. BOAT OWNERS AND FISHERMEN: You have three Public Boat Ramps a short walk up the Lane. Moor your boat in front of the Cottage and leave it there for the duration of your holidays! You have some 40 km of navigable river to explore! Check the tide tables! DOG OWNERS: Give your dogs a holiday as well! We welcome OUTSIDE repeat OUTSIDE dogs at Riverbend where they have a 7-acre "backyard" to romp in. Dogs give us a very "PAWsitive " rating! Book in for a week or settle in for a while (yes, some of our guests stay for several weeks and hardly ever use their cars once they have arrived) but you need to book well in advance, especially for the popular summer months. Our weekly rate during December and January and Easter is $1250; the rest of the year is $950. All prices are for two people. Okay, we give in: we have had so many requests from people who simply can't fit a whole week into their hectic life that we have decided to offer a special 3-night stay at half the weekly rate (all year round escept December/January and Easter). Still too long for you? Come on, do yourself a favour and take a REALLY refreshing, perhaps even life-changing break: come down in the evening (straight from the office) and leave on the third morning (straight back to the office, if you must). For three nights and two long and blissful days, do nothing but absorb the tranquillity of this place. You'll be a changed person! (If you want to know why we don't accept fewer than three nights, click here.) Whether you come as a couple or alone, you are welcome to join in with our activities or you may wish to remain completely private - the choice is yours. We can show you our beautiful South Coast, take you to the local markets, explore the Clyde River with you, introduce you to the local Bushwalkers or share a drink with you at the local pub. We have loads of books, videos and DVDs, and good music for you to enjoy. We also love to listen to your stories! There is no rush! This is the Land of Wait-a-While and our clocks are set to "Nelligen Time". You know it's time for lunch (in the treehouse?) when the CLYDE PRINCESS passes by with a group of tourists from the Bay who, unlike you, are only allowed thirty minutes at Nelligen before being whistled back on board and returned, kicking and screaming, to the "real world". Join us for afternoon tea or a "sundowner" on the verandah overlooking the river watching the boats or the sunset. Take a leisurely walk into the village for a delicious fish 'n' chips at the Nelligen General Store or a cup of good coffee at the "Café Nelligen". You'll love it here - we do! As we keep telling ourselves: we have to live somewhere so it may as well be Paradise! Which we would love to share it with you so please come soon!

Riverbend Cottage does not compete with establishments whose toilet seats
are wrapped in cute little "Sanitized for your convenience" covers or
who dull your senses with Muzak and the drone of air-conditioning
("air-conditioning" here means opening the window and letting the gentle breeze come in off the river).
Our TV reception is limited to the ABC, SBS, and WIN (however, you have a choice of dozens of excellent DVDs - all without commercial breaks!) And there are
plenty of books to read (you remember books, don't you? they are like DVDs with pages)
Once here, you may even relax enough not to miss your mobile because, guess what, it won't work here. However, we gladly take your messages on our
phone or, if you're the President of the United States or some other important person who is totally indispensable to the running of the world, you can
bring along your own laptop and log on to our FREE broadband WiFi.
Our guests from the city always enthuse about the air here. It's fresh
and composed mainly of oxygen and nitrogen, unlike what they are
used to. They fall asleep almost immediately, their bodies exhausted
from the lack of carbon monoxide and lead they have come to depend on.
This is a pristine bushland setting on the water's edge, so please
wear sensible footwear and behave in a responsible manner. We'd be happy
to leave it at that but since some people employ such a good team of lawyers,
we also require you to read and accept the following
Risk Warning.
It is quiet here and very peaceful and you're the only guest. Instead of having to listen to somebody else's snoring or be "entertained" by
some ablution noise in the room next door,
you may hear the occasional possum wander over your roof at night or be surprised by a little green frog looking at you from under the bathroom door.
All this sensory deprivation may come as a shock to you and we suggest that, as a rough guide, if your chronological (or mental) age is less than
30, you will probably lack the
appreciation of being miles away from McDonald's and the sounds of an infternal combustion engine.
To all you others and to those who want to recover their energy and rediscover
themselves, please come and stay and stay long, sit quietly, breathe
deeply, and listen to the river, to the birds, to YOURSELF!

OUR POSTAL ADDRESS: |
We had a very relaxing holiday. You know we just love to fish and this time we had our own freezer!!! Thank you both for a really lovely and friendly place to stay. You are great hosts and we very much enjoyed our trip to Ulladulla with you, also the bargain buy of gardening books!!! We should have the best garden in the West by the time we follow all the tips in those books. Padma, my plan was to go home lighter than when I started my holidays. I FAILED! How could I not eat all that lovely food that you share with us. Peter, I'm sorry we could not bring our guitar this time but we can see that your timing is much better with the songs we heard you play. Keep up the good work. You'll be playing at Mogo before too long. Catch up again soon. Best regards Carmel & Laurie, Cowra N.S.W.
Dear Peter, Padma, Malty & Rover We must say a very big thank-you to you all. What a lovely stay! Riverbend is a little piece of Paradise. Thank you both for your kind hospitality. We have had a very restful week. Kaiser has probably had the most fun in the whole of his life. Loved the walks to Nelligen. Enjoyed the DVDs; fantastic variety. Loved the music and last but not least loved the food. You are two very kind people. Thank you for making our stay so enjoyable. Look forward to next time. Kind regards Geoff & Sandra & Kaiser, Sydney
Dear Padma & Peter Thank you for having us stay in your beautiful cottage. Our little mini-break has been perfect and we hope we will return again. Thank you for spoiling us with wine, chocolate and pancakes and for being so friendly, warm and generous. We wish you all the best. Mike & Fee
I hadn't been on a fishing trip with my father for some thirty years. So when Dad consented to come fishing with me across the 2014 Australia Day weekend, I searched the web for a base from where we could fish the Clyde River for a few days. We were blessed to find 'Riverbend Cottage', just across the water from Nelligen on the banks of the Clyde! Offering Dad and I comfort, convenience and a peaceful ambience far above what I'd expected, 'Riverbend Cottage' was perfect for our fishing trip. Its position is smack in the middle of where I wanted to be, it has a jetty to tie my boat to and, when we weren't fishing, it offered us a peaceful space to recede from the surrounding world and simply enjoy being father and son again. Dad and I smiled all weekend and that had everything to do with our hosts, Padma and Peter, a charming, friendly, generous and hospitable couple who both appreciate personal space and know how not to intrude on yours. Always at our calling, Padma and Peter were never 'under our feet', so to speak. In fact, despite the cottage's location adjacent to their main homestead, you'd never know that Peter and Padma were there unless you needed them ... and that wasn't at all for Dad and I because they'd appointed the cottage perfectly and pre-catered to our needs meticulously. Clean, quiet, private and secure, in beautiful location fronted by the magnificent Clyde River and surrounded by seven acres of superbly manicured grounds, the cottage is a comfortable one-room open-plan affair. Dad and I slept beautifully on quality bedding, prepared extravagant meals in its reliable kitchen and enjoyed immensely the living space it offered us... all major facets of a truly wonderful experience. As stated, Dad and I employed the cottage as a fishing base. But 'Riverbend' comprehensively lends itself to far more applications than this, and especially to visitors' use as a true retreat. Many thanks for having us, Padma and Peter. Dad and I thoroughly and unreservedly recommend your wonderful 'Riverbend Cottage' to all aspiring visitors, planning to return there many times ourselves. We weren't disappointed by any aspect of our stay with you and can't possibly imagine how any other visitor would be. Joe Pelle, Canberra
Dear Peter and Padma, Thomas and I had a wonderful stay; we appreciated your generous hospitality. I particularly liked the food that Padma so graciously made - wanton and nasi goreng - delicious. Like your other guests, we appreciated the tranquility and natural beauy of Riverbend: the birds, the trees, the wind sighing through the branches, and of course the river. Our two excursions on the Clyde River were magnificent, made more enjoyable by Peter picking us up in Batemans Bay so no pedalling upstream. The sights and sounds of the water are unforgettable, especially enjoyable in the tranquil mornings. Of course, we mustn't forget Bibi, our puppy fox terrier, who delighted in herding the sheep, chasing the ducks, chasing the ball - endlessly - and navigating the river on the back of our HOBIE. We also appreciated the beers, the chats - and getting to know you and your babies Rover and Malty much better. Thank you for those additional treats and considerate thoughts: the hat, the snacks, the ice creams, the video recommendations and the local tour advice. We will long remember our stay and look forward to the next one. Bobby and Thomas and Bibi, Canberra
Thank you for our special weekend away from what we thought would be from home but I think this is another home for us. We have had a very special weekend. Your hospitality and friendship has been much appreciated. We will be back even if it's just for a cuppa and a chat. You are nice people. Jim & Katie
Dear Padma & Peter What a fantastic holiday we have had, really good weather, lots of flatheads and the very best hosts we have ever come across. You have both been fantastic and have gone out of your way to make our visit special! Peter, I'm sure my brother Laurie will be looking forward to chatting with you again. Thank you so much for making him and Jenny welcome. They had a ball! Keep up the practice. We look forward to hearing some new songs next visit. You should be very proud of your play-by-numbers system. It is working well. Padma, what a marvellous cook you are. All those lovely tasty meals and treats. They were a lovely surprise. You have a wonderful personality. Never change; we love you just the way you are! You and Peter make a great team!! Thank you again and we both look forward to our next visit with you.
All the best P.S. If you have any idea on how to avoid going home, let us know. You live in PARADISE!
I am lost trying to find the proper superlatives to express our gratitude in sharing your private space at 'Riverbend', Peter and Padma Goerman. Two short weeks on the edge of the Clyde River became a reality when my wife Margaret accidentally discovered your 'Piece of Heaven' on the net. What a discovery! Peter, you and Padma are truly special people that we are so glad that we had the opportunity to encounter in our travels and help us enrich and expand our minds around worldly issues. We were treated royally during every day of our stay in "Riverbend Cottage" (just like royalty). Peter, your help in getting us settled in, launching our power boat in the Clyde River, getting to know the challenges of anchoring our boat with significant changes in water levels due to dramatic tide variations (unusual for us) and then learning the ropes rowing your tiny, unstable dinghy to and fro, from jetty to the boat and from the boat to the jetty. The coup de grâce that will stick with me for a long time will be 'dunking in the Clyde River'. Padma and Margaret had a great laugh over that untimely experience! I have a great respect for that small dinghy now. Padma's cooking and treats were unreal. Sure beats eating out in 5-star restaurants. We never expected to be fed by our hosts. And such delicious treats!!! Besides my dunking, I leave with some fabulous memories of catching one fish in the Clyde (a legal-sized flathead) and we devoured it at suppertime. And then all those fresh oysters that I peeled off your pier under the jetty. Swallowed them straight off the half-shell and also had two (2) feeds of fantastic oyster stew!!! Enough said - no more bragging. Thanks so much! Clayton & Margaret Legault, Geelong/Australia and Kingston/Canada
Hi Peter & Padma We're home and sending thanks again for another enjoyable break. We had a great run home - no traffic, fires, smoke or delays and it took only 3 1/2 hours from door to door. Enjoyed a friand on route and many thanks for those and all the other gifts you spoiled us with, including last night's dinner; we really appreciate your thoughtfulness. Wishing us all some cooler weather and RAIN!!! Philip & Kath, Sydney
Dear Peter and Padma It was such a surprise to arrive for the first time at Riverbend and find such an idyllic tranquil setting and the loo placement was not a hindrance in any way - in fact probably worked better than if it was part of the apartment. This way we got to see the clear skies and stars in the middle of the night when otherwise we may not have ventured out at all. Cath and I enjoyed your company and hospitality. Thanks also for the use of the canoe. We'll be in touch no doubt. Take care and all the best and thanks again for a lovely week.
Sincerely
Hello Peter & Padma We just have one complaint: the week went far too quickly as we could've stayed forever! Brian & Fiona, Melbourne
So much nicer than in the photos! Andy & Netty, Goulburn
Dear Peter and Padma Thank you for sharing both your recreational and personal space with us. This was truly the "perfect holiday" in a well-kept secret paradise. We leave with many memories that will need to be topped up from time to time, so we look forward to returning. The week here has made us consider how much the pace of life dictates both our mental and physical well-being. Time to relax, chat, read, row and sleep have given us a new energy. Thanks again for all your hospitality and for Padma's fantastic rations. Max and Sharron, Wanniassa, Canberra
Dear Peter, Padma, Malty & Rover Thanks for letting us share your beautiful Riverbend. We have had a fabulous time & Lizzy and Darcy have had so much fun swimming (for the first time), canoeing, chasing bunnies, and hanging out with Malty & Rover. Thanks also for your endless generosity & hospitality. It has made us all feel right at home. All the very best for the year ahead.
Many thanks P.S. Lizzy & Darcy give Riverbend 6 paws!!!
Padma & Peter, Thanks again for yet another wonderful stay. Will definitely be back, & next time for at least 2 weeks. Joy & Tim, Orange Dear Peter and Padma, What a beautiful place to spend our 28th anniversary - everything you need and nothing you don't need! Your generosity and hospitality was very much appreciated. As you give to others may you continue to be blessed in return. With gratitude and heartfelt thanks Ian and Jill Dear Peter & Padma, Don't let them drag us back to Sydney!!! You are two wonderful people who have gone to extensive trouble to make sure we have had a tremendous holiday. As if this beautiful piece of the world wasn't enough, you have provided us with everything we could possibly need & so much more We will miss the tranquility more than we can say. It has also been wonderful to just sit & watch the wildlife (sorry, we couldn't resist giving Lulu a few grapes). Thankyou for your wonderful hospitality & for allowing us to experience "Riverbend". We will be raving about it to all our friends & family.
Kind regards Dear Peter & Padma Once again a lovely restful stay but all too short. One day, who knows, we might get the time to stay 2 weeks. All the best for your own travels which you are about to embark on. Take care.
Cheers, Jan & Dick Dear Padma & Peter, We (as before) had a lovely time. It's a beautiful spot. The dogs love the river. We loved the passionfruit butter Thankyou for a lovely stay. You're the best hosts we've ever had! We'll see you again very soon.
Tim & Joy Dear Padma and Peter Thank you for a very special 'impromptu' weekend allowing us to share time in your lovely home with two very warm and thoughtful people. God bless you always
Robert and Lesley Dearest Padma & Peter, It may have been 6 months between stays but the warm hospitality & serenity of Riverbend remains. This time we were able to share the wonders of the river with Lachlan (5 yrs) and perhaps a few lessons in patience. We bid you au revoir until the next time not sad but relaxed & peaceful for the moment in time at Riverbend. Colette Paddy & Lachlan Dear Peter & Padma Thank you for a very restful stay. Your warmth and hospitality was greatly appreciated. Grant loved the jetty (although it was I who caught the fish) and I loved swimming at your very private beach. Unfortunately our stay was cut short due to the terrible fires in Canberra - back to work I'm afraid!
Best wishes to you both Dear Peter and Padma Thankyou for opening your private piece of nature to us. We've had a lovely, quiet and relaxing weekend - just what we needed. Your hideaway is a wonderful alternative to a sterile hotel room.
Warm regards Dear Peter and Padma, Thank you for a wonderful stay at Riverbend. We have been able to do everything we set out to do: relax, see wildlife, breathe fresh air and catch fish. Both of you have been extremely generous & hospitable so we won't hesitate in coming back and recommending Riverbend to our friends.
Thanks again!! Dear Peter & Psdma, Thank you for the relaxing weekend - there is no better way to spend a birthday - sitting by the river & relaxing. Many thanks for the birthday cake, Padma, we enjoyed gobbling it all up.
See you again sometime next year. Peter and Padma We think your spontaneous, warm and sincere hospitality was the highlight of our one week stay. The essence and feel of Riverbend is unique and wonderful and it was just what we had hoped for and gave us the wonderful sleep and rest we often miss in the city. We were exceedingly comfortable and your attention to the little details ensured complete satsifaction. The 'starter' breakfast pack, the Glühwein and pancakes all added to an already great experience. Good luck with this enterprise in the future. We plan to visit you again - just not sure when.
Take care and have fun P.S. If my writing is all over the place it's because I've forgotten how to write during our stay. Dear Peter & Padma, What can I say? This place is HEAVENLY. Thankyou for a quiet & lovely place to work, and your generous hospitality. Linda Elliott, A.C.T. Dear Padma & Peter, It was all too brief but chance showed us a place that we will long remember and long to return. The perfect setting for any time of the year - although I dream of long, lazy summer days! A little tocuh of paradise - you lucky things!
Til next time P.S. Ever want to sell an acre 'down the back', let us know! Dear Peter & Padma We would like to thank you for a very relaxing and enjoyable stay. It's been a lovely extended honeymoon! The views are just gorgeous and although we didn't do too well with our fishing, it was great just to sit and talk. The breakfast you provided was a lovely touch and our room was lovely and cosy. We hope to be back in the near future when it's time to 'get away from it all'. We will be telling our friends about this place, or will we? Maybe this should just remain our little hideaway!!
See you soon Dear Peter and Padma Thank you for allowing us to share your beautiful hideaway. I am leaving this place feeling very relaxed and we look forward to visiting again in May. You are a lovely couple and made us feel very welcome. We enjoyed our chats and lovely breakfast and spending time with little Malty and Peter's stories.
Till May. Bye from Dear Padma & Peter Thanks so much for your hospitality. We found Riverbend by chance this time, but next time chance will play no part. We loved everything about your hide-away It's a very well kept secret. Peter, you brew the best 'nightcap', and Padma's pancakes are heavenly.
See you again I tell people that strangers are only friends you have not met. As a last-minute decision to spend the weekend at the coast, it could not have been a better decision. Not only did we meet two wonderful people, but we found a haven we will be (to be honest) reluctant to share with too many people in case we have to compete for time here. Tnank you for your hospitality & warmth. We look forward to many memorable stays at Riverbend in the future. Colette & Paddy, Gowrie, A.C.T. Dear Padma & Peter Thank you for a relaxing stay in such a beautiful place. Your position here is really very special. It's great to be able to leave our fishing boat and canoe tied up right here out front of the cottage. In other places where we have visited, we would have to drive to the boat ramp two or four times a day. Your hospitality and friendship are very much appreciated. We look foward to seeing you both again.
Many thanks. Dear Peter & Padma, Thankyou for your hospitality over the past couple of weeks. You have a beautiful, peaceful part of the world here, and both Peter and myself have enjoyed our relaxing stay. Padma, you are the Queen Pancake Maker, our tummies loved your breakfast treats. We look forward to telling our friends about our Nelligen adventure, and hopefully we ourselves will be back for more visits sometime. This has been my best 29th birthday ever!
Many thanks Dear Peter & Padma, Thank you for allowing us to stay at Riverbend. The setting is very realxing and breathtaking. The birdlife here is wonderful. Many thanks for your hospitality. You made us feel as if we were part of "the farm".
With kind regards Dear Padma & Peter, Our holiday started really here. This is a beautiful and quiet place with a wonderful view at the river. We will miss breakfast and tea at the treehouse, wake up by the cockatoos and the silence. Thanks for your hospitality and the 'Club Med' feeling and the experience in the local pub and of course the mushroom farm. Merel has informed us that she'll return here when she is 18 years old. So don't sell your property! She will miss Padma. Now we have to compete with the attention and care of her second other. Hope we can satisfy her. We will keep this place and your friendship in our heart and memory. Enjoy both Peter's retirement.
Kind regards Hi Padma & Peter The expression "words fail me" seems so appropriate right now because it is very difficult to express adequately our thanks for inviting us to share in your piece of Paradise here at Riverbend. In Stuart Magee's book on the Clyde River he talks of the atmosphere he experiences - "peace", he says, "that you could carry in a bucket" and that is possible to find here at this bend in the river as we watched the movements of the tide. Add to this the hospitality on a most generous scale along with stimulating conversations, and surely the world's largest book and video collection and one has the recipe for the greatest R & R ever!!!
Thanks again Thank you Padma & Peter We discovered you on the internet - that most modern medium - amd found exactly what we were looking for - a step back to life as we prefer it: quiet, peaceful & undulating. Loved the chairs! 1 week was almost long enough to try most of them with different favourites every day, mood and weather, time & tide all playing a part - but long live the tree that supports the 'house'. We will return to our own home and seek a seat or two to capture the same feeling - thanks for the inspiration. And thanks for the treats and sharing your animals; they are delightful, domestic & wild.
Don't change a thing! Hi Padma & Peter It is 18 months or so since we last visited Riverbend but it was just a few hours after arriving here that the magic of the place settled on us. The stillness apart from the bird chorus - the most active thing was the ebb and flow of the river.
Here's to the next time! P.S. I forgot to mention the special effects of the night sky - WOW! Has anyone seen stars quite in such array? Then there is access to Peter's extensive selection of books and videos and Padma's culinary treats (and lessons) - one could go on and on!!!! |
